This is the fifth Gewurztraminer under our Cicada label. The first four have all won trophies and we are confident this vintage is just as impressive, albeit slightly drier than some years. The fruit was sourced from two long established, premium Gewurztraminer vineyards in Marlborough. 2018 was a good vintage for Gewurztraminer in Marlborough with a very hot and dry start to the season and then a few showers later. Fortunately, our fruit was harvested in pristine condition. Harvest took place in the cool of the evening and the free run juice was predominantly fermented and handled in stainless steel tanks, with a small portion of the final blend spending some time in barrel. Extended time on lees has added to the complexity of the finished wine.
This wine is pale lemon in colour; it has a classical bouquet of luscious florals, lilies and roses, yellow honeysuckle, turkish delight, lemon citrus, figs and ripe stone fruit. The sensational nose, rich and beguiling with abundant spices, stone-fruit, wild ginger and lychees, continues to evolve with time in the glass. On the palate it is a full bodied, mouth-coating wine with richness and power. It has a lovely texture and is almost oily in feel with delicate acids, ripe stone-fruit characters, spices, ginger and turkish delight predominating. The after-taste is long and satisfying with the spicy notes lingering beautifully on the silky, smooth finish.
This is a very alluring wine with lovely florals, great texture and a long satisfying finish. It promises to age gracefully for several years.
